Telling a story, your pitch
Most people waste their dating profile page by filling it with a lot of boring information that really should be saved for a second or possibly a third date.
When you are searching for love online, one of the things you have to keep in mind is that the other person doesn’t know who you are. That may seem obvious, but it’s something many people just don’t exploit. Yes, exploit. See, with online dating, you normally get a profile page with the opportunity to tell other people about who you are.
This profile page acts as a sort of filter. You want to filter out all of the people you are incompatible with. To do that, you have to have a good sales message that actually drives away the “bad” apples and attracts the “good” ones.
Most people waste this profile page by filling it with a lot of boring information that really should be saved for a second or possibly a third date. What you should be doing with online dating profiles is telling a story. All good marketers and salespeople are able to tell good stories. Since you’re selling yourself to someone else, tell a story about who you are.

Every great story has a headline. This is possibly the most important part of your profile. If you write a boring headline, it’s over. Where do you get good headline ideas? You’re going to laugh, but go look at Cosmopolitan Magazine. Yes, Cosmo. Their writers, and editors, live and die by the headlines they run. You want to know something? The most successful headlines run over and over and over again. They don’t keep running bad headlines because bad headlines don’t sell magazines. They only run the best headlines.
Take great headline ideas and adapt them for your own personal profile. Make them exciting. For example, which headline is more exciting:
“I like long walks on the beach and good conversation.”
“…so after I got the handcuffs off, I decided that I should stay away from ‘Jay’s Smoke Shop’.”
The second one sounds more like an adventure, doesn’t it? Now, maybe your date isn’t interested in dating a criminal. That’s understandable. Most people don’t, but what most people do want is excitement. They like exciting stories. Give your potential future dates an exciting story with an exciting headline to draw them in.
What most people want is excitement.
Maybe the dating website only lets you put part of what you want to say in the headline portion of the profile. That’s OK. That second headline is kind of long, but it’s still pretty effective as:
“So after I got the handcuffs off…”
Don’t just talk… demonstrate your qualities
That headline makes the reader want to click through to read the rest of the story. By the way, pick a story that shows off your talents, skills, abilities, and your personality as well as your sense of humor. Don’t tell people you are silly or honest. Tell them a story that demonstrates to them that you’re silly or honest or whatever it is you are.
Your headline, and your story, will naturally attract the right kind of people for you. It will simultaneously drive away people you wouldn’t be interested in anyway. In that sense, your profile saves you time and money since you don’t have to go on a bunch of bad dates. That’s how you get good dates and keep things honest using age-old marketing tactics.
